Las Vegas, the party capital of the world, is so big, so decadent, that it literally has something for everyone. While the lavish casinos give off an image of wealth and prosperity, it is possible to experience this electric city on a small budget. Here are five, almost-free things to do in the downtown and surrounding areas.
1. Stop by the free shows
An obvious place to start is to check out the free shows on the Strip. From the volcano in front of the Mirage to a free performance at Circus Circus, most of the older casinos host great shows every night. And while it might seem cheesy, you can’t help but feel like Matt Damon in Ocean’s 11 while watching the Bellagio fountains.
2. Visit the parks
Las Vegas is surrounded by some of the best natural parks in the South West. Who would have known it? While it’s ok for you to spend $200 for a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon, it is possible to spend only $7 and take a hike through the gorgeous Red Rocks National Conservation Area, located just 17 miles from the Strip.
3. Sit and watch the world go by
Sometimes it’s good to just sit and watch the world go by. Las Vegas is a melting pot of different people and cultures so why not find a bench and soak it all up for a while? You’ll feel refreshed and ready for the next point.
4. Stop by a Sportsbook
Whether or not you are a betting person, hang out in the Sportsbook of a casino for free drinks. No one seems to check if you’re gambling or not, so why not grab a drink and soak up the atmosphere.
5. Visit the historic Las Vegas and Container Park
Take a break from the Strip and spend some time strolling through the historic heart of Las Vegas. Home to a gigantic praying mantis that is a perfectly-proportioned replica of the insect, this area features galleries, a park and classic landmarks like the Golden Nugget.
