All About the Iconic Roulette Wheel

Not only is Roulette the favorite and most popular casino game worldwide, but the distinctive Roulette wheel has also become the symbol of gambling and casinos. Here’s some information about the game and how it came about:

Back to the Start
Roulette is all about odds, house edges, and statistics, so it’s no surprise that the wheel was actually invented by French physicist, mathematician and inventor Blaise Pascal in 1655. Back then, however, Pascal’s intentions were not to create a casino game, but a perpetual motion machine (a machine that continues to operate without drawing energy from an external source).

The laws of physics say that it’s impossible, but Pascal obviously wanted to defy the odds. Although his experiment failed, his creation led to the birth of the most popular casino game of all time.

Zero to Double Zero
The zero didn’t exist on the Roulette wheel until 1842, when Francois and Lois Blanc designed a Roulette wheel with a single zero on it specifically for King Charles III of Monaco, which was a big deal since it gave the house a bigger house edge.

The game made its way to the US and of course, Americans wanted to add their own ‘spin’ on it. To give the house an even bigger house edge, they went ahead and added the double zero to the wheel, meaning that instead of 37 slots, there would be 38.

Roulette Online
Up until the early 2000s, the US was your best bet if you wanted to play double zero Roulette, but if you wanted to play single zero Roulette, you had to head to Europe. All of that changed, however, when online Roulette casinos were introduced. All online casinos give players the option to play any version of Roulette, no matter where they are in the world.

Fun Fact
Ever wondered why Las Vegas was nicknamed Sin City? Some might think that it’s connected to the “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” theme, but perhaps there’s more to it than that. If you add up all the numbers on the Roulette wheel – that’s 1 to 36 – you’ve got yourself a rather “devilish” number. Yes, that’s right, 666. Legend has it that the inventor of the single zero Roulette wheel made a deal with the devil to obtain winning Roulette secrets. But of course, that’s just a tale.

There’s no knowing what the future holds for the Roulette game. If you enjoy gambling or would like to try it out, what better place to do so than Las Vegas?
