For the first time ever, Las Vegas has a major professional sports franchise of its own, after having been awarded an expansion team by the NHL in June.

The league’s 31st franchise – the first since 2000 – will be taking over the T-Mobile Arena on the Las Vegas Strip. During the announcement on Tuesday, owner Bill Foley revealed the franchise’s mascot and logo, both of which were met with generally positive reviews.

The team will play as the Vegas Golden Knights, with a color scheme of steel gray, gold, red, and black.
Commenting on the name, Foley said in a press release: “We selected ‘Knights’ because knights are the defenders of the realm and protect those who cannot defend themselves. They are the elite warrior class.”

According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, the franchise was deciding between Desert Knights, Silver Knights, and Golden Knights prior to the announcement.

Foley went on to say: “The Vegas Golden Knights team name and logo embody this great city and the mission of our team,” Foley added. When people see it, we want them to say ‘These guys never give up. These guys are going to win.'”

With its name and logo finalized, the next step for the Golden Knights will be forming a roster that can compete in the Pacific Division and Western Conference for years to come.

It will therefore be up to general manager George McPhee to establish a winning foundation and built the Golden Knights into hard competition and a real threat through the 2017 expansion and entry drafts before the team’s inaugural campaign rolls around.
